Instructor: Ashton Henry
Students: Grade 3
Age group: 7-8 Years old
This video I created aims to educate students on the topic of fractions from the 3rd grade ranging from 7-8 years old. Many choices I made were influenced by what we’ve learned in the course so far. Choices like the colors were important as I wanted them to contrast for easy-to-read sections so I chose white for the background and black for the text. I used what we learned on storytelling to hopefully kindle interest in fractions using my lesson with a story that could be seen as relatable. Another important part was relating to previous knowledge and asking them to see what they can notice in their own life would tie in knowledge to the outside world helping kindle a better understanding of the topic. Using the right imagery helps a lot due to the fact these are young students so keeping attention can be difficult. The tone I spoke with in the video was a bit more upbeat as you have to keep it light so as not to make students lose interest. Adding in the 2 questions can also help with engagement as it makes students think about what they’ve learned. Since we have gone over accessibility I decided it would be important to add subtitles to this video allowing it to cater to a completely new audience and making it easier to view. Overall I believe the combination of all of these points allowed me to create an effective and engaging lesson.
The readings we’ve gone over helped a lot with how evaluating media should go in terms of teaching. The use of the SECTIONSÂ was very interesting in showing how the selection of proper media may go. The SAMR model also helped in showing how a change in the media could be drastic or minimal just for assistance which can be important depending on the media you have chosen. While cost has not been a focus in this course it is important to factor in if you use these methods to teach others. The use of multiple media is important as stated by Dr. Bates as they all reinforce each other allowing for better connections for education. Creating media as a student is important as it allows an entirely new way to allow creativity while also showing what the student has learned in an effective manner.Â
TPACK
The TPACK concept was interesting as it discusses the combination of knowledge being evaluated. Throughout this course, we’ve discussed about how we must make connections to information people already know and TPACK shows how it must even be used in the development of the media. The PCK is very important as it shows the instructional design we’ve discussed like in terms of how it will help their learning outcome and it must be effective in this manner. TPK applies the same idea in the way that it helps students create a better learning outcome thanks to the medium they have been presented with. TPACK has become a lot more common today as teachers realize more about how modern media can be used for educative purposes.
Scaffolding
I have seen scaffolding used a few times before and believe it is quite effective. While it is creating an individual experience it is still assisted by support and media could be used as a means for this. With a teacher who has designed scaffolding properly, it can be done effectively allowing. This idea uses multiple Merills principles such as the demonstration in showing students how to solve and the use of prior knowledge as activation. It uses Merills principles very well and is effective in teaching new information.
Active learning
Active learning personally helps me a lot in being more engaged in a lesson when I have had it. With proven effectiveness, I believe it should be adopted by more instructors. The idea of deconstructing this for a student I feel would really solidify how this active learning is effective. The demonstration by Sean Robinson was intriguing as it displayed how while it may not have had correct answers it taught students how active learning can create an entire lesson in itself. The examples we were shown were effective in demonstrating how easy it is to get an entire class to discuss the subject. I believe it’s important to become more commonly used in classes of its proven effectiveness
Students need to do something
In the students need to do something presentation it resonated. For multiple years early in elementary school i struggled with some teachers and as stated by her daughter mine did the same thing of basically going straight out of the book. Having a teacher thatt is not displaying a way thats effecitve in teaching ruins alot of students experiences in school. The 9 step lesson plan seems effective as it shows all the ideas needed to further educate students on the topic.I really liked the idea of mini-projects as it allows students creative liberty in how they want to show there learning in a new fun way. At the end she brings up the bonus of collaboration and collaboration with peers is very important as it allows for you to see a new perspective allowing for potentially more effective learning.
HT5
Lastly is my short presentation and HT5 activity. I chose hockey as it is a passion of mine and I have a vast knowledge of the subject

I created this video when I was in high school with a partner and it was very rough. My objective with this video was to teach people about gravity and some information on Issac Newton. Editing this video was a challenge as I only had the uncut original video. I decided to input pictures with some information hopefully allowing viewers to create a better link with the information. The colors I chose were decided on as they contrasted well allowing for good visibility of the writing. Keeping the writing simple was very important as I did not want too much going on to cause cognitive overload. I felt keeping some elements from Minecraft was important as it brought up another form of media allowing me to express my information more effectively. Using Merill’s principle on using the information to link we discussed how gravity is constantly in use making people think about how it affects themselves. I believe using something such as a video game helps viewers stay engaged with the material and become more interested in a subject. I used an online video software editing called Veed, it was simple for me to pick up and learn how to implement photos as well as other information. I was able to remove a lot of unnecessary footage allowing for a more clear message. Overall I believe the updated version of this video allowed for a message that was much more clear and helped teach the viewer a lesson.
In the article “The 7 Storytelling Techniques Used By The Most Inspiring TED Presenters” I found the first speech very inspiring to me. It’s an issue that we would most likely never experience in our lives and he explained it flawlessly factoring in many of the techniques we’ve learned about. Of course, immersing us in the story by properly setting the scene as well as the visual aid. The use of visual aid was done well and didn’t contain unnecessary information. The story is also personal to him being an issue his family faced which cause issues with their livelihood. He finishes it with a positive ending on how he’s helped not only himself others and changed his own life.
Artificial Intelligence
In some of the last readings, we covered artificial intelligence and its place in learning. I have used AI multiple times previously using a program to create art just to explore the possibilities. AI is very interesting and I hope more ways can be found to use it in a learning environment. It is impressive the speed at which it has developed in recent times. While AI has become an incredible tool it does also have its drawbacks causing issues with academic integrity. While I do find chatGPT more intriguing I decided to use DALL-E to assist me with my storyboard helping me create a better visual for whoever is reading hopefully leading to more retention with visual representation.
Storytelling
When I created a storyboard for a how-to video on making jalapeno poppers, I knew I had to incorporate the principles of storytelling to keep my audience engaged and make the recipe easy to follow and delicious. Using Merrill’s Principles, I made sure to keep the recipe simple and easy to follow, while also adding visual aids and graphics to help viewers follow easier. The storyboard helped me to create an easy-to-follow idea for my video and gave me the freedom to add my own ideas with visual and speaking aids. Overall, creating a storyboard for this project taught me the importance of planning and organization in film and video production, and how following these principles can make a large difference in keeping the audience engaged and having a good video.
Script
I’ve made a rough script for this video which I will show here. I used the A.A.A.A formula to develop my script helped give it a more proper structure.
[Open to a plate of steaming poppers]
[Soft music playing]
Narrator: Welcome to the step-by-step tutorial on how to make these delicious Jalapeno poppers!
Narrator: I have been making these for a few years now and they are a crowd favorite, Let’s begin!
[Cut to the table showing ingredients]
Narrator: Here we have everything you will need to make these poppers
Narrator: Your gonna want some good size jalapenos to have a filling popper
Narrator: Next your gonna need Cream cheese it’s up to personal taste however, I enjoy using herb and garlic flavored
Narrator: and finally we need prosciutto used to wrap the jalapenos
[Soft music plays as it cuts to the cutting board]
Narrator: To begin we must cut the jalapeno half down the middle and repeat this for all of them
Narrator: After cutting them we will take a small spoon and scoop the insides of the jalapenos out, seed can be left in for desired spice level
Narrator: Once they’ve been emptied you will fill them with cream cheese leaving a smooth surface
Narrator: You will now take them and wrap them in a slice of prosciutto
[Show initial shot of steaming jalepenos]
Narrator: And lastly all you must do is put these in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes and you will have some fresh delicious poppers!

The recent reading has been intriguing as I’ve always enjoyed the idea of graphic design and seeing how different people’s ideas differ so vastly. While I do not have much experience with graphic design I’m excited to explore the topic. Working on finding the right ratios and how to cater to them in a way that doesn’t create a cognitive overload for someone trying to understand. Mayer’s principle becomes important to think of during this as you don’t want to overdo the images to go along nor the words.Â
Powerpoints
The “How to avoid death By Powerpoint” Presentation I found useful as it helped me see a lot of mistakes I’ve made in the past with presentations. The redundancy effect was interesting as I have experienced this myself with teachers in the past and this helped explain it very well. His points in the headline made me think about how I’ve used them in the past and I see how I can improve in the future to help to manage the cognitive load and direct people’s attention. In past presentations I’ve found I used too many objects, the presentation puts into perspective just how important it is to not overload your presentation. As a whole using these points to improve my PowerPoint in the future will be important as it creates a better experience all around.
After watching this I decided to make my own attempt at a simpler slideshow than I have done in the past. Using the Unsplash website as recommended by the video ‘Creating WordPress MultiMedia posts’ helped a lot with high-quality images. I tried following the rules I learned from this slideshow as well as some color theory with my choices. This helped me understand the simplification a lot better and I will use these points in the future
Merril’s principles brought up points that can be seen in real-life examples which I have personally been part of in a real situation. The first point “Learning is promoted when learners are engaged in solving real-world problems” was my favorite as the idea of gradually increasing the difficulty and losing the “sink or swim” mindset helps those learning understand an idea a lot easier and more effectively. From my experience, I believe that much of schooling still follows old principles which do not reflect as much promotion in the growth of knowledge in the ways stated here. While I’ve seen these principles used a few times reading into them helps give me insight into how I could portray myself when teaching something new. It has also brought up several points we have discussed in this course such as having relevant media which I found interesting.

The recent readings and videos have been very intriguing and brought up information that is typically more of an afterthought for many. I find the various videos on accessibility and how it’s used very interesting. While I personally do not struggle with a hearing sight or hearing disability I find myself using things such as captions or text-to-speech often. Being able to have a narration to put to text helps me a lot with comprehension of a document as it allows me to process a lot easier. I use captions nearly daily whether it is for an educational youtube video, scrolling through social media, or just watching a tv show or movie. I find these tools extremely useful not only for myself but others as well. If access is limited to educational material as well as nearly any media, due to a disability it’s taking away a source that many rely on for daily life. As technology has progressed accessibility has become much more thought of within development.
Segmenting
I decided to try segmenting on some of the readings this week and while it takes more effort I found it useful. It helps a lot with managing the load that the mind takes when reading and managing the intake of my verbal and nonverbal channels. Being able to just think of one section helps me process it easier for some writings versus how I would typically read it all. Giving options to students with things such as play, pause, stop, and replay while useful also personally helps my mind knowing that I am in control of my education.Â
Sketchnoting
I decided to make a simple Sketchnote where I broke down the video on segmenting. I found the imagery very useful as it helps envision more what my notes were based around. It’s apparent how this is a useful method to retain knowledge while managing the load that a brain can handle. If this method is adopted more commonly it could help many students as well as many from the professional world

Hello, my name is Ashton Henry I am currently in my 2nd year of Uvic, however, I am undeclared. Previous to this I have never even had a blog and I am excited to use this as a tool for education. I have always been interested in how media is being used in the learning world as technology progresses. As I was choosing classes this one caught my eye as I have not taken a class like this and it interested me as it opens another set of possibilities for my future. My goal is to take what I learn in this course and apply it to future schooling as well as careers.
Different Types of media:
Interactive media: “Text, graphics, audio, and video have been integrated into digital environments, allowing a user or audience to interact with the source of this content” (Elon University). Examples of interactive media could include social media such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
Multimedia: “The various components of multimedia are Text, Audio, Graphics, Video, and Animation. All these components work together to represent information in an effective and easy manner.”(Randall Bass). Examples of this would be things like music or film.
Interactive multimedia: “Interactive Multimedia is any package of materials that includes some combination of texts, graphics, still images, animation, video, and audio”(B.C.A Study) Examples of this could be something such as virtual or augmented reality.
I believe that the most effective overall learning would be the use of interactive multimedia, however, the use of multimedia and interactive media should not be overlooked. While interactive multimedia si overall ideal I believe its important to use various types depending on the subject.
